Plant a Tree in Honor of Earth Day!

April 22nd is Earth Day.

What is Earth Day?

Celebrated by more than 1 billion people across 192 countries, Earth Day is the world’s largest civic observance! Created over 50 years ago by then-Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day is a day to spread awareness about environmental sustainability and promote environmental protection. That first year, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to push for a more sustainable world and launched a movement that continues to inspire individuals and families.*

Today, Earth day is celebrated in many ways, from environmental summits to neighborhood litter clean-ups. The day is used to inspire friends and neighbors to make a change that protects the Earth. We know our Giving Grove friends are already taking great measures to protect and honor Earth, but we want to encourage you to find a new way to celebrate Earth Day this year. To help you find one, we’ve made this handy list:

Ways to Celebrate Earth Day 2021:

1. Challenge yourself to be zero-waste.

It’s easier than you might think. Research recycling policies and centers in your area to find out how you can recycle plastic, paper, aluminum, and glass. And then compost any food waste!

2. Grow a green thumb.

Start a vegetable and herb garden at home to grow the items you use most. This cuts down on trips to the grocery store and improves biodiversity.

3. Say “Goodbye” to plastic.

Drink tap water from a reusable vessel, and say “goodbye” to plastic bottles forever!

4. Attend an Earth Day event.

5. Plant more trees!

Maybe you don't have the space or materials to plant a tree in your yard on Earth Day, but you can make a big impact with a small donation to plant a tree where it's needed most. Giving Grove trees sequester carbon from the atmosphere and reduce stormwater run-off while feeding food insecure neighbors and giving children and the surrounding community a safe, clean place to play. It’s an all-around Earth Day win-win that only takes a couple of minutes! A $50 donation buys both a tree and all the holistic care supplies it needs. A $100 donation allows Giving Grove to plant two trees using holistic methods, and a $750 donation could supply an entire orchard! That’s 2.7 tons of carbon sequestered!

Consider sharing the Giving Grove website with your friends and family and suggest tree donations as a covid-conscious Earth Day activity!  Don’t forget to share your Earth Day activities with us on social media using #GivingGroveEarthDay . And continue the celebration until April 30 by observing Arbor Day! Visit our Arbor Day page for more resources on tree planting.
