Friends,

Spring is such an exciting time for orchardists!  After a long and cold dormant season, warmer temperatures awaken the trees and bring the promise of delicious fruit. While there are many reasons to celebrate this spring, one celebration was particularly special to The Giving Grove ... the 8th birthday of the very first Giving Grove orchard!

This orchard, located at  Hale Cook Elementary in Kansas City, Missouri, serves both the school and the community that surrounds it by providing hundreds of pounds of fresh apples, pears, jujubes, cherries, blackberries, and raspberries yearly. It was planted in April of 2013 by The Giving Grove's founders in partnership with Friends of Hale Cook (a parent-led organization).

Orchard stewards Aviva and Sarah (parent volunteers) use the orchard as a learning opportunity for the children and to build community at this historic school in the heart of Kansas City. This year, they hosted an Orchard Birthday Party! Students learned about the lifecycle of the fruit (from bud to harvest), helped thin the fruit, made birthday cards and - our favorite part - SANG HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the trees!

It warms our hearts to know that eight years after its planting, this orchard is still providing its neighbors with sustainable access to fresh fruit, community, and knowledge. Happy birthday, Hale Cook Orchard! And here's to many, many more!

School's out... Now what??

Summer vacation is great... until the kids get bored!

Keep your kids entertained, outdoors and off screens with our extensive collection of educational resources on givinggrove.org. These primary and secondary aged activities, developed in partnership with the EPA and Kansas City Community Gardens, will keep kids engaged while they learn about community orchards and the ecosystem of fruit trees. Find them at the bottom of our Giving Grove Resources page.

Now Introducing...

They say the best gifts keep giving; we think the best gifts keep giving and GROWING!

This year, consider the gift of a fruit tree planted in honor of a loved one. The tree(s) will serve its community for generations to come by providing sustainable access to fresh, healthy food. Each donation will include a hand-written note and Giving Grove gift sent to the recipient. With multiple gift options available, you are sure to find the right fit for your occasion.
